Day 8

Today was our last day of GS. We trained GS sections; the boys and girls each had their own course. Luckily the rain waited until noon to hit Mt. Hood and we had a drier morning than we anticipated. After skiing, we piled into the vans and headed to Portland for the mall and movies.

Here are some pictures from our morning, each athlete has a still shot...

 Day 7

Today was our second and final activity day. Activities included the same options as before (mountain biking, soccer, and rock climbing). Groups arrived back home between 2:30-4:30 for a relaxing afternoon in their houses. Dinner was mac and cheese cooked by the house parents.

Day 6

Another bright sunny day up on Mt. Hood! We spent the morning pounding runs of sectioned GS gates and drills. At lunch we had guest stars, Nolan Kasper and Ted Ligety, over for pictures and autographs. In the afternoon, we went to Wildwood for games and a BBQ. After some cheese burgers and hot dogs, we had a jello drop competition.

Here are some photos from today!

Day 5

Awesome day of sunshine on GS skis! Today we started to focus on fixing individual weaknesses (as opposed to the last couple of days working on the basics as a group). On the steep section of our lane a brush corridor drill was set and on the bottom a GS course and brush course was set.
For dry-land we went to Welches school for some circuit training. The circuits included soccer, football, kickball, agility, core, and speed.

Day 4 (Activity day!)

Groups left this morning at 9:15am for rock climbing, soccer, and mountain biking. No campers chose to hike which was probably a good thing since the bad weather went in and out all day. Most groups arrived back to their houses around 3-4 to enjoy an easy afternoon of down time.

Also...Happy Birthday Steve!
The girls in his house kindly baked him a cake....

Anna ran a tuning clinic for the girls in her house...

Day 3

Another great day on the hill! We skied on GS skis again today. Major improvements were seen across the board as kids got their full confidence back. A corridor brush drill was set to create a more advanced setting for the movements we have focused on in the past two days.

This afternoon we went to Wildwood campground for some games (basketball, kickball, soccer, volleyball) and then some hamburgers and hotdogs served by our camp's own professional bbquers. Dessert was watermelon and s'mores. Kids also signed up for the day-off activity in which they will take part of tomorrow. The choices are rock climbing, soccer, mountain biking, or a hike.

Day 2

Today we skied on GS skis. The weather as Sally put it, "was the entire winter in 2 hours." We skied through rain, cold wind, snow, fog, and for the last hour a beautiful sunny day. Welcome to Mt. Hood!

The ski groups were pretty much the same as yesterday a part from a few changes. Groups focused on balance doing one ski drills.

Due to flooded fields at the Welches School, the houses did a recovery workout on their own. Megan/Sara and Charlie/Worm's house enjoyed a hike on the Salmon River trail.

Dinner for tonight is salad, spaghetti and meat balls, and garlic bread cooked by the house parents.

Day 1

First day up on Mt. Hood! The weather was not optimal, but the minimal visibility and bumpy terrain helped us work on staying balanced and centered. The cold and wet conditions did not affect the smiles and excitement of our first day on snow since winter. After taking a couple of warm up runs, we split in to groups by age and spent the rest of the morning doing drills to help us get that good feeling back. By late morning we caught a glimpse of blue sky.

Each house did their own recovery and journal time (each athlete has an athlete journal in which they record what they worked on that day and other personal notes). Tonight we are having an all camp dinner at Tracy's house for some world famous chicken caesar wraps.

We are off to an awesome start and are hoping for some better weather tomorrow.

Highghts from the travel day

The travel day went incredibly smooth (aka our head count is still 62). Our main highlight of the trip was Casey Cardon’s birthday celebration. As our plane was preparing to land in Portland the flight attendants directed a special ceremony. Here is a video of one of the most memorable performances of the “Happy Birthday” song any of us will ever sing.

Though it was raining and freezing cold (compared to the east coast heat wave) when we arrived in Portland, Tracy warmly welcomed us with some fresh pizza outside the baggage claim. After our pizza party the group split into their assigned houses and headed off to Welches (our home for the next 10 days).

Packing Reminder:
Keep it light and simple.  If you can't carry it yourself, don't pack it (the airline will charge for heavy bags (usually bags over 50 pounds) or too many bags (Southwest allows 2 checked bags for free), campers will be responsible for any of these charges).  You need a (2) ski bag (which can be stuffed with clothes if needed \), one large cargo bag and one backpack.  Your backpack will be used as a carry-on bag.  This pack will serve as your camp backpack for the camp. Ski boots should be packed in your travel bags or carried on the plane.  Try not to duplicate your clothes, except for items like socks, underwear, t-shirts, shorts.  You will need one outfit that is suitable to be worn when going out to dinner.  Please be reasonable and bring only what you can comfortably
carry.  The weather in town is typically summer-like, so bring summer sport
clothing for afternoon activities.  Ski clothing should be fairly lightweight and roomy enough to allow for extra layers underneath when necessary.  It is typically cold in the early morning up on the hill, like winter, but then warms up as the day progresses.
Keep in mind that we have laundry machines in each house so pack accordingly.

DEMO Equipment: We have made contact with all the major ski, boot and binding manufactures. Each one of these companies has a small showroom and shop located in Government Camp, Oregon.  We encourage athletes to test equipment while at camp. Coaches will assist athletes with equipment testing, coaches will ensure well thought out testing and make sure athletes don’t over test equipment, (in other words you do not want young ski racers testing new boots and new skis at the same time, we encourage them to try a pair of skis with there own boots and boots with there own skis.)  This is an excellent time to for athletes to try next year’s stuff!  Campers will have a journal to record testing information.
